A social history of Clones and how the craft of Clones Lace became an integral part of the community following the Great Hunger and destitution of the 1850’s.

The craft of Clones Lace became an integral part of the community following the Great Hunger and destitution of the 1850’s. Crochet lacemaking was a strong and vibrant tradition in the Drumlin hills of west Monaghan and south Fermanagh where these skills were passed down through generations.

This beautiful and intricate craft established some 1,500 lace makers in this small rural area, supplying the fashion houses and markets of Dublin, London, Paris, and New York, with its products worn by gentry throughout the world.

The Ulster Canal Stores is delighted to host the International Clones Lace Summer School with Maire Treanor each June.
